The site looks incomplete without one.

The design language of the site is circles and flat colours, so the bare minimum for a favicon would be a solid, filled circle which matches one of the colours on the site. The design is largely two-tone, so an improvement to that design may be to have a hollow circle of the darker colour on top of a background in the lighter, background colour. This design could then have a smaller, filled circle placed on a point around the hollow circle(or ring)'s diameter, like a planet on an orbit similar to the corner graphic.

Both 16x16 and 32x32 favicons need to be created.

This is heading in the right direction, but the circle needs to be brought in from the edges a bit, and a small planet added.

GIMP is also not the right tool for the job. It is just about possible by using elliptical select + the 'to path' option as described here, but the workflow is awkward and destructive. I could maybe complete the task with it as the design is not very complicated, but maybe there is an easily available vector editor I could use instead?
